Research supported that consumers are more likely to buy samples of music if they were allowed to listen to 60 seconds of “high-quality” versions of songs, said professor Min Lu of Robert Morris University.   According to researchers, most consumers make up their mind around the 60 second mark.

Apple will announce their move from 30 second samples to 90 second samples during their media event.  This new tactic has high hopes of having consumers purchase music on their sites and stray from rival companies that play full-length songs like Pandora, Vevo, and YouTube.  But giving full length songs to listen to isn’t a great solution.  This attracts the risk of satisfying the users interest in the song and also those who “free ride” songs on the internet.  Although easily accessible, online music samples are in 5th place behind friend recommendations (71 percent), radio (76 percent), familiar artist (64 percent), and music TV (39 percent).  Hopefully, by extending the length of samples, this new tactic can increase their sales of music.

Awesome article!
